Mild steels:

In general, carbon steel is called 'mild steel' or 'plain carbon steel'. According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, carbon steel contains barely 2% carbon and none of the significant alloy elements. Yet, it constitutes a substantial part of steel manufacture with a diverse range of utilization.

Typically carbon steel has magnetic nature, strong and stiff which means its applicability in motors and electrical appliances is paramount. Due to this property, welding carbon steels with more than 0.3% of carbon content require a lot of precautions. Yet, the problems of welding stainless steel outweigh those of welding carbon steel. As the carbon steel easily rusts, it is best if not used in a corrosive environment unless there is some protective coating used.
